The HiSbase Project

Motivation

The need for scalable and fault-tolerant frameworks to conduct e-science collaborations on a global scale has been fueled by exponential data rates and increased public outreach of Grid computing projects in many scientific realms. Decentralized infrastructures like Peer-to-Peer (P2P) networks are promising candidates to offer such characteristics.

HiSbase is a framework which equips overlay networks to offer load balancing, high-performance query processing, and efficient data dissemination, motivated by the demanding requirements of e-science applications as in the field of astrophysics.

Research Topics

Current Status

We have developed a prototype of HiSbase based on FreePastry together with a graphical user interface, which allows the comparison of different histogram structures and shows additional information about the P2P Network.

We gave a demonstration during the Lange Nacht der Wissenschaft (October 13th 2007, 18:00 to 24:00) and during the celebration by the Department of Informatics of its 40th anniversary.
